July 2006--Five Oʻokala homeowners and members of the Protect Oʻokala Ad Hoc Steering Committee stand at the old Oʻokala sugar mill site. Left to right, former Hamakua Sugar Company employees Walter Ita and Bobby Labrie have lived in Oʻokala for 69 and 56 years, respectively, while Robbie Pagliai, holding son Giovanni, has been a resident for six years. Former Hamakua Sugar Co. cultivation superintendent Scott Enright and his wife, Susie Collins, moved to Oʻokala 16 years ago. The five are part of the nine-member community advocacy group that represents the majority of Oʻokala homeowners who believe Tradewinds Forest Products’ proposed mill and power plant would negatively impact the health, safety and welfare of residents.
